Finned heat exchanger
Air-cooled liquid coolers · Air heaters · Heat recovery coils · Forced-air coolers · Compressed gas coolers · Oil coolers · Generator coolers · Evaporators · Condensers
Finned heat exchangers from ETS AG are used primarily for heating and cooling liquids with gases or vice versa. Heat transfer can take place with various media such as water, brine, saturated steam, hydraulic or lubricating oil, thermal oil, as well as condensing or evaporating refrigerants. Thanks to their finned design, finned heat exchangers can accommodate a large active outer surface in a small volume. Our series cover a range of heat transfer surfaces from 0.1 to 8,000 m².
Types
Six types: FLNB, LK, LBD, LBF, LBW and KKG.
Type FLNB
The air-cooled oil coolers of the FLNB series are designed according to the latest findings in heat engineering and consist of aluminum elements with a casing/hood and fan. The standard series comprises twelve types with a max. cooling duty of 150 kW and is manufactured to the latest technical standards. The main application is recooling hydraulic, lubricating or gear oil. The air-cooled oil cooler of type FLNB, for example, is an excellent choice when you want to recool hydraulic or gear oil.
Type LK
Recoolers of type LK remove excess heat to the ambient air – usable in liquid circuits such as water or brine, and as a condenser. The standard series comprises 24 types with heat transfer surfaces up to 1,200 m², available as a wall or ceiling model. We advise you on the optimal choice, backed by over 20 years of practical experience.
Type LBD
This type is used for heating process air or process gas through condensation of saturated steam or superheated steam. Depending on requirements, various materials such as galvanized or stainless steel are available. Applications with high operating pressures up to 800 bar with corresponding test certificates are also possible. ETS AG offers various design types here, matched to the gas used. Of course, we are also happy to advise you individually on request.
Type LBF
A universally applicable finned heat exchanger used for heating and cooling gases and liquids. Various material combinations from copper, copper-nickel, brass, aluminum through to a fully stainless design for high corrosion resistance are possible. The individual elements can have an overall length of up to 8,000 mm. We are happy to discuss the ideal overall length of the materials and their properties with you during the planning phase.
Type LBW
Heat recovery from exhaust air that has already been used is becoming increasingly important. The LBW series is specially designed to make good use of waste heat. Even large exhaust air flows at a low temperature level can still be utilized this way.
Type KKG
High-pressure coolers are a special application. When natural gas or industrial gases are compressed, discharge pressures of up to 800 bar are reached. With the KKG series, the compressed gases can be recooled simply and safely.
Advantages of ETS finned heat exchangers
Efficient transfer of thermal energy between gases and liquids.
Maximized outer surface
Press-fitted fins make it possible to fit extremely large heat transfer surfaces into a compact volume.
Pressures up to 800 bar
Special designs (type KKG) ensure reliable gas cooling even at extreme compressor discharge pressures.
Materials
Tubes: copper, copper-nickel, steel, stainless steel. Fins: aluminum, copper, stainless steel. Casing: aluminum, steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel.
Expansion compensation
Special design variants make it possible to accommodate even large thermal expansions of the tubes without difficulty.
Design and function
Finned heat exchangers essentially consist of core tubes with slid-on or press-fitted fins, a sturdy casing, and several collectors or headers. The flow arrangement is adjusted individually according to the required operating data. Special design variants make it possible to accommodate even large thermal expansions of the tubes without difficulty. For applications with demanding corrosion requirements and high operating pressures (up to 800 bar), special tube/fin material combinations are available.
- Core tubes with fins The fins are slid or press-fitted onto the core tubes.
- Casing Aluminum, steel, galvanized steel or stainless steel.
- Collectors or headers The flow arrangement is adjusted individually according to the required operating data.
Sizing based on process data
The specific design is sized from the process data.

Typical fields of application for this heat exchanger type
What finned heat exchangers are built for
Heat transfer takes place with water, brine, saturated steam, hydraulic or lubricating oil, thermal oil, and with condensing or evaporating refrigerants. Cooling and heating liquids or gases is part of everyday work in many industrial operations. The units are especially popular in power plant engineering, in the machinery industry, and in the paper industry. In these fields, various work processes are very closely interlinked with the cooling or heating of different liquids. In addition, we offer excellent finned heat exchangers that can be used in the chemical industry or in process engineering.

Finned heat exchanger
Frequently asked questions about finned construction
Key criteria for thermodynamic calculation and cleaning.
Which recoolers and custom-built units does ETS offer?
Dairies, the paper industry, waste incineration plants and other sectors rely on us for the right recooler – for both finned and special heat exchangers. If our range does not include a suitable model, we develop a custom-built unit on request.
How does ETS support the selection of a finned heat exchanger?
We offer personal, no-obligation advice on our finned heat exchangers, with a range covering nearly every industry and custom-built units where required. Use the inquiry form in the downloads area or call us directly.
Does ETS also handle complete energy engineering planning?
Yes – the complete package covers more than just the recooler: we handle all of the energy engineering planning, so you reduce costs in the long term and protect the environment.
How is a recooler connected, and why does it remove operating heat?
Heat exchangers transfer heat via a heating or cooling medium; at high duty this generates heat within the unit itself. A recooler – connected to the heat exchanger externally or internally – continuously removes this operating heat and keeps the temperature stable. Without recooling, the heat exchanger can be damaged and stop functioning.
How sensitive are finned heat exchangers to fouling?
In dusty or fibrous ambient air, particles can settle between the fins. We counteract this by adapting the fin spacing (pitch) to each application. Where dust loads are high, wider fin spacing is chosen to allow easy cleaning with compressed air or a water jet.
How is permanent mechanical contact between tube and fin achieved?
This is critical to efficiency. After the fin plates have been fitted onto the core tubes, the tubes are expanded hydraulically or mechanically from the inside. This presses the tube walls firmly against the fin collars.
Which sizing data are required for a calculation?
For precise sizing, we need the inlet and outlet temperatures of both media (e.g., thermal oil and air), the flow rates (volumetric flow rate of the air, mass flow rate of the fluid), the available installation space, and the maximum permissible pressure losses on both sides. The flow arrangement is adjusted individually based on these operating data.
Which design is suitable for condensation heat recovery with low particle loads?
If fouling from solid particles is low, high-grade stainless steel is generally used for the fins and tubes. For annual cleaning, the entire unit can be designed as a slide-in module; the fin pack is then sprayed clean with a pressure washer.
For what purposes are finned heat exchangers used as air heaters?
Do you need various air heaters to optimize your internal company processes? ETS Energie-Technik-Systeme AG supplies you with the right finned heat exchangers. One tube circuit is filled with a medium to be cooled (gas or liquid), and the circuit running in counterflow carries a heating or cooling medium. In the special case of air heaters, the heat generated by this process is released to the ambient air via the fins. Air heaters are used wherever indoor climate needs to be improved – for example in industrial and warehouse buildings as well as in open-plan offices. For process air and process gas, this task is handled by type LBD, which transfers the heat from condensing steam. ETS AG therefore makes air heaters available to a broad customer base. We work with companies in the chemical industry, environmental technology and the paper industry. Our customers also come from power plant engineering and the machinery industry. We are happy to advise you on air heaters for industry and commerce.
